When people comment on your food & habits

So happy its Thursday, cause I’ve got something on my mind. Its actually been on my mind awhile now, but up until the other Friday at work I kind have had it!

So, healthy living. For many, its a way of life!  Including me! Its no fad “diet” no quick fixes. Just eating healthy, whole some eats. Everyone has their own version of what healthy means to them and mine is more of a balance. As I like to say, I like to have my cake & eat it too.
I have made solid lifestyle changes to be a better person and feel awesome.

I promise I’ll be getting to the point. And sorry this may or may not make sense. But none the less its Thursday and Thursdays are for thinking out loud.
Thinking-Out-Loud

If you know me personally, you would know I am tall, lanky { thanks dad!! } working on building muscle { MUCH harder then I thought }, and have a love for sweets + a good sweat sesh.
Healthy life = good energy

… A few years ago I would go to the gym with a girlfriend of mine and then we would hit up the diner next door and each have our own peanut butter pies. NO SHAME. I love peanut butter pie, but after reading and researching for a few years,I kind of realized not the correct way to recover from a workout 😉 Maybe a snack platter of eggs, apples & nuts would be a good recovery meal and the peanut butter pie for my dessert! 😉

This brings me to F O O D. What we eat and how people actually judge you on this.

A little story for you:
So. Two Fridays ago, at work a guy in the kitchen passes a big meaty corn beef ruben sandwich across the way to another server. He made a joke about it and gave it to her to eat. While not offering me any, but made a remark  ” You don’t eat that kinda sh*t do you” UM WHAT? I stood there and literally blinked at him and wondered what the F he was taking about. Why wouldn’t I eat that sandwich? Would I eat it as my everyday lunch 365 days for lunch. No. Maybe someone else would, but I would eat it! Just like I do with other things.

Do I eat healthy, yes. I do my best to do “8/20” or probably more like 30% because I love sweets way to much ..Do my sister and get burgers & fries when we work together, ugh.. you bet ya!  Do I try samples of our desserts at work? DUH. So why would someone feel the need to remark that, to me. When clearly you don’t even know me.

I have no idea, but that comment just rubbed me the wrong way. I honestly was baffled and upset the rest of the night because it then proceeded  to make me question everything. . I am no way ashamed of living a healthy life style but for a split second this guy made me question myself. Healthy lifestyle has made me a lot more open to new foods { and thanks to George }, recipes, life & actually natural beauty { helping my skin clear up } <– FOOD IS MEDICINE. But it kind of made me feel BAD about myself !? Finally I am over it. This is my life, not his or anyone else’s.

A lot of other comments I’ve gotten & I think they are rude:
Do you count calories {NO}
Do you eat carbs .. { UM YES !!! }
Why don’t you drink beer? { HI, vodka girl! }
You don’t eat meat do you? { A FEW TIMES A WEEK!}

These questions are rare but sometimes I am hit with them and it makes me question people. I would never in a million years tell a woman whose on the heavier side how to eat. Maybe she can’t control the way her genes are. It’s almost like me hearing things of this nature. My sister also gets questioned because she’s just like me.
Eat whatever you want, and if anyone tries to lecture you about your weight, eat them too.
Then I saw this quote ^, true. And I will eat you. I eat ALOT. I eat ALOT of healthy things but I also eat ALOT of chocolate and sweets. So, shut it 🙂  and since then I’ve been a little more lax and eating more junk, Cause this guy got in my head- oh that cake from Sunday’s party is now showing on my face!

OK- END RANT.

Question:
Does anyone else ever deal with these sorts of remarks? The one at work literally sent me over the edge.

Let’s talk period + {helpful ways to tame it}

Oh that lovely time of the month. Where we’re are so pleasant and cheery miserable.
Periods. They suck.  Cramps, hormonal, want chocolate for breakfast lunch & dinner.  No? Just me? Oh and cry at random times.
Every month is different when it comes to PMS. Sometimes I forget it’s coming and others, much like this month everything hurts, sore, bloated, fatigued, cramps.. the whole 9 yards!
I am always curious what other gals do to help with that time of the month or their favorite chocolaty chocolate dessert is!
Here are some things I have noticed that do help!

Bananas: Potassium-rich foods like bananas help fight cramps and bloating
Vitamins, preferably B:  Vitamin B is good for period relif, and B6 is helpful in regulating periods and dealing with an irregular period.
Snack on almonds- Almonds are an excellent source of magnesium, another mineral that may provide some PMS relief. Studies have found that magnesium  can improve mood and lessen water retention in the week or two before you get your period.
Avoid salt for a few days:  Instant bloating, watch your intake that week!
Take a walk: It really does help if you do work out during that time of the month, but sometimes it’s a no go cause your hurling over with your stomach, but the best bet is a 30 minute walk!
Heating pad: I get the “to go” ones where I can wear a to work, or when I’m at home i heat up a herbal one. Seriously the best.
Epsom Salt Bath: Epsom salt baths are great for anything. Sore muscles, detox and for your cramps! why not light a few candles & have a romantic night with aunt flow.
Last but not least, have the dang chocolate. you eat great, you workout.. enjoy a few extra pieces that week! 😉

Benefits of working out with your partner

Lately, George & I have been hitting the gym together. It’s been a nice change of pace! Sometimes our schedules don’t allow it and we do our own workouts when we can. But we’ve been sticking to this plan the best we can! I think it’s because we are holding each other accountable. Some days I don’t want to go at all! But, he pushes me. Or vise versa. And when I say “hmm, maybe I’ll just go to the gym” he reassures me that, nope take a break { very important }Having each others back on this has been really good.

Here are some great benefits when working
out with your partner { or anyone else! }

1- Keeping one another accountable. This is #1, this way when one starts to feel unmotivated you have your other half encouraging you.
2- FUN. Can’t say all workouts are fun. But a workout together can put a little spin on everything and not feel so much as a “workout”
3- Success. Reaching your goals will become a lot easier when you have someone rooting for you.
4-Teach & be taught: giving and receiving  tips is great! Whether it’s about a workout or a post workout meal. All great to share and learn!
5- Connection. It’s one more thing that you can bond over. Talk about your goals, what you want to accomplish & plan ahead together.
6- Working out = endorphins = happy people 🙂 after a workout I ALWAYS {97%} of the time feel better! this will carry throughout your day together. And happy wives who thrive off endorphins won’t kill their husbands…. kidding 😉

I like the idea of working out with someone now. Whether it’s one of my friends, sisters or George!

Elf 4 Health: Round II

Hey guys! hope your staying warm if you’re getting hit with some snow. Sunday was our first snow fall of the season and today has brought some more which meant I got a snow day and classes we’re canceled. YAY, but also.. I was hoping to take care of my first set of finals, so now just waiting to hear when they are rescheduled.

I wanted to check in and share about ELF4HEALTH: If you haven’t heard about its it’s a 6 week program where each person is partnered up with another person elf to keep one another accountable during the holiday season. How cute is that?! And smart! Lindsay and Elle created this and I think its such a good idea.

I love these! So perfect and such a great way to remember what the holiday season is all about… gratitude, paying it forward, make a donation and also treating and loving yourself! With help from your elf along the way 🙂 Which I was able to meet last night {over email of course, and is lindays’s mother in law!} What’s an elf duties? WELL

As an Elf, you are expected to support your assigned buddy with their holiday health goals and the daily challenges. Elves & buddies will be reassigned every 2 weeks. You are only asked to email your buddy 2 times per week:

  • Monday: Send your buddy an email to help them with the challenges for that week. Ideas of things to include/attach: your own personal tips & tricks, inspiring words and/or images, a new, healthy recipe or workout to try.
  • Thursday – Saturday: Any time during these days, check in withy you buddy! For example, ask them if they tried a new recipe, workout, or had fun with any certain challenges. Feel free to tell them how you did with your challenges, too!

**Note: you do not need to be a blogger to do this. Grab a friend, partner or significant other to do these challenges with you!

Healthy eats for your skin

Yesterday I said I had been eating tons of orangey food, { squash kick! }- which is true. I am trying to give my body what it needs through food. Whenever seasons change, especially summer to fall .. and  fall to winter, my skin changes. I personally noticed a difference. Less glowy and dull. Maybe being pale has something to do with it?!  haha 🙂  – Sure, there’s makeup out there and I love my BB cream. But eating certain foods are good for your skin- to give that look!

Almonds- eat on the go, on top of salads or yogurt bowls: Packed with vitamin E, protect from sun damage.

Sweet potato’s- one of my favorites! Love it chopped in a salad or by its self with coco oil cinnamon & peanut butter: Great source of vitamin C and boosts collagen.

Dark chocolate- I used to hate dark chocolate, but trader joes has a few great ones!: Dark chocolate is filled with antitoxins!

Healthy fats:  Omega fatty acids- Very important! coconut oils, olive oil, sunflower oil, peanut butter, nut butters. you name it!

Food is one of the best medicines! Healing yourself from the inside out 🙂
I have noticed drastic changes in my acne from eating more “clean” so hopefully I can get some nice color & glow now! 😉
