Homemade chicken gyros { recipe }

A lot of our meals when we have days off are always something comforting,  especially Greek food. We love hearty stews and soul warming soup. Another favorite are gyros.  Honestly, nothing is better than a gyro, off a street corner with French fries, ketchup & mustard! I don’t think that taste will ever go away, and the best of the best is obviously in Greece. I remember my first gyro, the day we arrived. Not only were we in the backyard with a huge feast with the family, but we also couldn’t sleep until we had gyros.
These chicken gyros we recently made were so good This recipe includes how we prepared the chicken and taziki sauce { yogurt }! In addition, some sweet potato fries cause we had to do it right : ) <— I followed the recipe minus brown sugar!

Here’s our little version:

  • Juice from 4 lemons
  • 2-3 tbsp.olive oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced + divided
  • 1 tbsp.. fresh dill
  • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon  mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon  dried oregano
  • Salt, pepper & { and other spices of choice for taste }
  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1/2 inch strips
  • 1/2 cup cumber, chopped
  • 1/2 cup of yogurt { we used chobani  }
  • 2 slices of nann, or pita bread
    –> First, you’ll need to marinate your chicken
  • Combine your lemon juice, olive oil & half of your garlic, oregano in a bowl, toss chicken in the mixture.
  • Mix the bag around so all of the chicken is coated and able to marinate.
  • Let it sit for one hour in fridge.
  • In a small bowl combine cucumber, yogurt, dill and the remaining garlic you chopped, salt + pepper and blend { or food processer }cover and refrigerate until serving —> Note, cucumbers have a lot of water, try to drain or squeese the water out for your taziki sauce won’t be runny * }
  • Once chicken is done marinating, take it out and throw out remanding juice
  • In a large skillet, sauté chicken until cooked.
  • * Optional * place chicken under broiler to give it that extra crisp
  •  Grab your tzatziki sauce and spread across your pita
  • Then your chicken and any toppings you wish! {We did the Greek way with fries!, sweet pot fries 😉  Onion, Tomoaotte, Lettuce etc }
  • Garnish with some ketchup and mustard
  • Fold up, eat & ENJOY!
